What is marketing? According to the American Marketing Association, marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stake holders.
According to Kotler marketing management is an art and science of choosing target markets and getting, keeping and growing customers through creating delivering and communicating superior customer value.
The following is an analysis of the role, job, and contribution of a marketing manager:
A] Qualities required by a marketing manager
Good communication skills.
Strong determination to achieve goals.
Knowledge of self, he must know his capability before taking up such responsibility.
Maturity to handle situations, not just routine problems but also those affecting the organization internally but also fighting external sources mainly competition.
Knowledge of the product. He must know what he is selling.
Knowledge of firm. He must analyze the situation and position of the organization constantly.
Update technology.
Patience.
One of the most important traits required is creativity.
B] Roles and job of a marketing manager:
He acts a demand manager: as Kotler says he must be skilled in stimulating demand for a companys product. This requires him to not only create a demand for new products but also stimulate demand for existing products.
Brand awareness is also a very important task for a manager. He must make create stable marketing so as to bring awareness amongst customers in a target market.
Another important task for a marketing manager acting as a demand manager is to help shift demand from negative demand to full demand.
Chose the right market segmentation. Segmenting the market is one of the key reasons for the success of a product it lies in the hands of the marketing manager.
Idea generation. The real birth of a product takes place from idea generation.
Idea recognition. These ideas can spring up from customers, clients or employees and it is the responsibility of the marketing manager to identify such potential product.
Building stronger brands.
Customer relationship management.
Maintain quality of the product.
Price fixation.
Adopting the right marketing plan.
Adopting marketing information systems so as to assess the managers information needs.
Achieving organizational objectives.
Market research operations: this can be done through data collection, data analysis, interviews. And a final judgment based on such reports.
Fixing remuneration.
Overcome tactfully the effects of competition.
Maintain stable relationship with creditors ands well as other firms.
Maintain corporate trustworthiness.
Choosing the right channel for distribution.
Analysis of the degree of competition.
Social benefits.
He also has the responsibility towards his customers. As the definition states he has to help more customers to enjoy more of these products and services.
Using modern technology such as data warehousing, data bases and data mining.
The key source to his success is definitely customer satisfaction.
Difficulties:
Dynamic environment.
Satisfying customers is the trickiest and most difficult part for marketing manager.
Market research.
Variations in economic position.
We can say that the basic job description doesnt relate every time to the actual job. In fact the employee should be adaptable to the environment and maybe work on tasks which were is not in the same order everywhere.

Great article written by Jeff Molander at revenews.com. We thought it was right in step with the social media movement.
Sales is not a dirty word. Selling on social media does not exclude the idea of having some fun. And no, success is not as easy as being engaging and having personality—stop saying it is!
The global economy and financial markets are about to collapse, jobs are scarce, and consumer spending remains weak. Enter the promise of social media. We’re nearly five years into the social media revolution, but most businesses are agonizing, not revolutionizing. If you are one of them you’re not alone. Yet despite what all the marketing experts and research companies keep telling us, there are proven cases of social media marketing generating a direct and measurable return on investment (ROI) for businesses. What’s their secret? They’re defining ROI as S-A-L-E-S generated from social media marketing, not engagement. And you can, too.
The Problem is Engagement
Want to remain in your current job forever or watch your business struggle to profit? Keep on engaging passively, without defining a worthwhile outcome. The truth is there are two schools of thought on how to use social media to generate ROI:
Social media is a better way to influence, not sell. Hence, we work to create “brand preference” through repetition (reach and frequency) and engagement.
Social media is a better way to create and capture demand, leading to a sale. Logically, this involves using relevant calls to action and direct response tactics when it is appropriate.
As Barry Silverstein recently pointed out, eMarketer reports “60 percent of respondents (marketers) [say] the leading way to measure social media marketing success was followers, friends and likes. Only 25 percent of marketers were using incremental sales attributable to social media (which is basically ROI) as their primary measurement.”
Whether a customer’s need is in early stages (latent) or advanced, social media can help bring sales to fruition faster because it is inherently interactive. The trick is to avoid wasting time influencing people (in hopes of earning purchases) and begin designing to sell.
For instance, ask yourself, “Are we developing ways to help customers’ understand their problems, goals or needs more clearly?” Take this simple step to assess your own perspective. Continue to explore your own, personal context by recalling a time in your life when you became more clear on what it is you really needed after doing some research. Consider how you suddenly felt better equipped to navigate toward answers, products, and services that met your needs. This is how social media can shine for your business.
The Solution is Simple: Sell
UK-based Fournaise Marketing Group offers the latest bad news in its 2011 Global Marketing Effectiveness Program where it states marketers have lost credibility with CEOs. Executive leaders say marketers over-focus on the latest trends, “because they believe they represent the new marketing frontiers. However, they can rarely demonstrate how these trends will help them generate more business for the company. Worse, Omnicom’s Kern Organization released a study revealing marketers believe their biggest obstacles are the goals themselves. For instance, marketers state their top marketing challenge is “acquiring a large number of new customers.” Next is “increasing retention rates and revenues from current customers,” followed by “increasing the quality and quantity of leads for field sales forces.”
If these are the challenges, then what are the goals? More importantly what does this say about fixing the problem?
Want to stand out from this crowd and demonstrate tangible ROI? Get back to basics. Sell!
Get Started Today
I’m constantly meeting successful social marketers that are using a simple technique to create social ROI:
Defining sales as the goal, not engagement
Earning insights on customers’ pains or goals using tools like Facebook and blogs
Answering very basic, common questions in ways that drive more discussion about that pain or goal to reveal and sometimes nurture purchase intent.
Remember: when customers understand their problems more clearly, they’re more equipped (and willing) to be gently escorted toward the answers they need—your products and services. They’re more prone to see a purchase as a pain reliever or means to achieve a goal.
“Our approach to getting going—attracting local customers and netting leads with our blog—was simple,” says River Pools and Spas chief marketer, Marcus Sheridan, who says this is a great way to get started right now.
“We’re successful at generating leads because we wrote down every question that’s ever been asked to us by customers. We didn’t care how generic or broad the questions were. These quickly became the titles of blog posts that continue to pay sales dividends over time when matched with calls to action for tools that solve even more problems.” Sheridan, like others using this technique, is leveraging how customers use search engines in early buying stages.
Join the Social Media Evolution
“It’s all about the relationship.” Phooey. It has always been about the relationship, trust (“social currency”), and listening. These concepts aren’t new. Let’s stop pretending that they are and earn the respect of CEOs again. Selling someone something does not require engagement, conversation, and a relationship. These things are all created by selling them something first!
Yes, the reason most businesses aren’t achieving sales with social media has a lot to do with all the hype. Most of us are reacting to social media, getting sidetracked by the excitement of a false revolution rather than focusing on evolution.
The rush to “just do” social media has served to redefine our goals away from sales and toward tactics like retweets, friends, fans, and likes. I say false revolution because I see so few examples of social-media-revolutionized businesses and because those who are innovating and thriving are evolving, not reinventing.
Have you designed your 2012 social media strategy to sell by focusing on translating customers’ needs into problems they need to have solved? If so, when giving solutions, do you compel customers to take action in ways that give insight and allow you to nurture need to fruition?
Search & Mobile Marketing Trends: SEO Apocalypse 2012
This has been a year where search marketing truly matured. Mobile became one of the largest growth components, with its share of the overall search market now reaching 20 percent.
Looking ahead, expect 2012 to be the year when we push further into the Mobile Semantic Web 3.0, which presents opportunities that will drastically change SEO as we know it.
There will be “Four Horsemen” of an SEO apocalypse in 2012 and they will all be carrying a mobile device.
1. QR Codes
Quick Response or QR codes in 2012 will be near ubiquitous both online and offline in the U.S. to easily send people with mobile devices to online destinations.
QR codes are increasingly being used on billboards and various signage as nearly 50 percent of U.S. mobile users have a smartphone. Mobile devices themselves are ubiquitous with their users and are used often in tandem with using other media, such as magazines and television.
I envision these pixelized matrix barcodes present in the corner of all televised programs, especially news. Viewers will then be able to receive and share the latest updates on that televised news or programming with their mobile devices online. Television use will also be the medium which will explain how to use QR codes as its being used, so it takes hold in the mainstream understanding.
Ultimately, QR codes will then replace or be in tandem to URLs on all offline advertising and even online. This will cause search engines to rely less on text links and factor in interest from QR code use. Google and Bing can directly acquire this information from mobile users on their operating systems, Android and Windows Phone 7, respectively.
2. Voice
There will be reduced dependency on text for search and logins in 2012, especially on mobile devices.
Voice actions on Android and recently Siri on the iPhone have provided users a more direct way of getting answers and producing actions on their mobile devices. Just as Google used its free 411 service to build the database for voice actions, I feel it will, in turn, use the database from voice actions as a free/paid service to business users for logins and purchasing online by just using your voice.
Another means of logging in for mobile users will be touch-friendly image combinations that can also be used to refine certain search results. Voice capabilities at times avoid the need for search engines and/or present the need to change search tactics.
3. Fragmentation
Search will be further fragmented in 2012 as mobile search is itself already fragmented by device-type to encompass feature phones, smartphones and tablets – with each offering different results not only between one another, but also with desktops.
The current landscape of mobile search to desktop is outlined with data and action items in a recently published Covario mobile SEO white paper. I envision that the search results of the three mobile types, as well desktop, will differ even more in 2012, as consumers’ ultimate search intentions and actions are different based on the device they are using.
A segmented search approach is needed, especially in mobile, as sites will need to be properly designed for each device type and optimized for the device user’s intent.
4. Personalization
There will be further personalization in 2012 search results as Google – with its secure login, Google+ and Android -- know what you're searching for, where you are when you search, what you like, and who your friends and influencers are.
“The perfect search engine would understand exactly what you mean and give back exactly what you want,” according to Google CEO Larry Page. Generalized search tactics become even murkier as results become so individualized to time, place, preference, and personal social trends.
Summary
The year ahead will also bring opportunities in the search space as we clarify and universalize our sites in the Mobile Semantic Web 3.0 with microformats and HTML5, while also being more granular by location and device with paid campaigns such as local paid inclusion. Is your site ready for the SEO apocalypse of 2012?
Is it really possible to make a second income from home with your own small internet business? Why not, just ask the 4 plus million people who are already making a full time or second income from home. The fact is that the number of people working from home with their own small internet business is expected to sharply rise in the next few years making now the time to take advantage while there are still second income opportunities available with this type of growth potential.
Here are the five hottest internet jobs of 2010. Hint; One of them lets you play around on Twitter and Facebook. Yeah, really.
1. Start An Ecommerce Store - This particular small internet business opportunity has been around for a while, but it is only in the last couple of years where an average Joe could really get the assistance he needs to get their small internet business up and running. Places like Amazon have huge ecommerce affiliates, where they will even give you your own website to promote. Other places have free programs (after all you will be making money for them) where all you need to do is select from a catalog of millions of products and just drag and drop which ones you want into your new website. Most of these programs also offer great customer service should you have any issues. The best part is that you are not responsible for any of the merchandise as it is stored by drop shippers. Your only responsibility is getting your site out on the internet for people to see. Before you know it you could be making a great second income from home.
2.Cell Phone Marketing Affiliate- This is perhaps the most fun you can have making a second income from home. Just imagine you had a chance to travel back to 1995 when the internet was still in its infancy. Affiliate marketers were sucking up profits like a vacuum because there was NO competition. Well, that soon changed and you know the rest. So here are the stats on cell phone advertising in mid 2010. You will reach 2.5 billion more people, pay a tenth of the price as Adwords and other similar internet platforms and have virtually no competition. Sound familiar? I have made the most money with this second income opportunity and I expect it to take over as the main media outlet as more and more people are now using their smart phones to do what they used to do on their laptops. This is a super smart platform for building a small internet business around and you have the potential to far exceed a second income in a short period of time.
3. Social Media Manager - Like to play around on websites like Facebook and Twitter? Yes, there is actually a job for that. And not only is there a job for that, it just happens to be the most in demand position of 2010. Think about it. Social media sites have exploded in the last few years leaving businesses to wonder who will help them keep up with this fast paced medium. The fact is that most businesses know that they will dramatically increase their bottom line, but just don't know where to look since a job like Social Media Manager has only been posted on major job sites since the start of 2010. Build a small internet business around maintaining businesses social media accounts and not only will you be paid - an hour, but you will be a hero as you boost sales considerably for your clients. A second income is very easy to make as a Social Media Manager and you will have a blast while doing it.
4. App Developer - This second income opportunity requires some investment, but is a fantastic niche to start a small internet business around. The business is more about coming up with ideas for applications and then having them built for you. There are several reputable App development companies out there who have solid relationships with both Facebook and Apple and will actually present your plan to them to make sure it will actually be green lit before you spend a dime. Your small home business would focus arounf promoting your new App and getting members or subscribers to sign up. Not to blow smoke up your you know what, but it is true that some Apps have made close to a half a billion dollars since their launch. Bit we'll settle for a second income at the moment.
5. Flipping websites/domains Flipping websites and domains could really be put into two separate categories, but the fact is that most who do one usually dabble in the other. Flipping websites or domains is a second income opportunity that you can begin right away with almost zero cost. You can buy websites on the internet for about - and then sell it for a sizable profit just by performing some simple marketing tasks and building a little traffic. There are plenty of free ways to build traffic. Once you have your site getting some traffic then just sell it and rack in the profits. Depending on how much traffic you can drive you can make a couple of hundred percent return on investment. So for a site that you buy for , you can realistically expect to get about five to ten times what you paid with minimal traffic building efforts. Domain flipping is more like the stock market where each domain has a fluctuating value. If you enjoy the market then you will have a blast with domain flipping.

Steve Jobs. One of the true marketing geniuses of our lifetime. For much of my professional career (IBM PC, Dell, Power Computing) I competed against Apple. While Steve Jobs was the chief executive officer there was no doubt he was also the chief marketing officer as well.
There are three things that he and Apple did better than anyone and I’ve tried to put them into practice whenever possible.
Make things easy for customers: Apple has been legendary for its focus on “ease of use,” and the company has pioneered many great products with this mission in mind. But making products and services easy for customers to have a great experience should not be limited to technology firms. Banks, hospitals, insurance companies, auto makers and airlines could learn this lesson from Steve.
Develop “whole products”: For years Apple was criticized for the “closed” system approach it used for its Macintosh computers. By controlling the hardware, operating system and many of the peripherals, Apple made the Mac easy to use, but also much more expensive. This ultimately limited the market share for the Mac. However, this whole product philosophy was critical to the success of the iPod. Steve not only envisioned a highly portable music device, he pioneered a new and fair pricing model for music that was made available through the iStore. The music could easily be managed through iTunes, and this combination of iPod, iTunes and iStore transformed how we buy and listen to music. It also reignited the Apple brand and paved the way for the highly successful iPhone and iPad.
Create a beloved brand: Few brands have as many passionate fans as Apple. This brand fanaticism has been a result of not only lessons #1 and #2 but also the consistency with which the company communicates. Every touch-point in a consumer’s experience has been executed with the same visual identity and simplicity. From product packaging and advertising to the website and retail stores, the Apple brand has been clearly and consistently delivered. Steve would have it no other way.
While we mourn the loss of a real pioneer, let’s be grateful that Steve Jobs had the vision and courage to show us all how marketing could be done. For me that will be his enduring legacy.
American franchises are primed for growth next year, potentially ending a three-year streak of decline, according to a new report. But that growth is expected to be modest at best, leaving the sector well shy of pre-recession numbers due to persistent concerns surrounding credit access, health care costs and political gridlock in Washington.
Franchise employment is projected to accelerate in 2012, growing 2.1 percent next year after a 1.9 percent hike in 2011. (Asim Hafeez - BLOOMBERG) The number of franchise establishments is expected to increase 1.9 percent next year, from just over 735,000 in 2011 to just under 750,000 in 2012, according to the International Franchise Association, which will release its 2012 Economic Outlook later this afternoon. That would mark the first increase since 2008, after which the number of establishments dropped steadily for three straight years in conjunction with the overall recession.
“Franchising remains a bright light in a still very challenging economic recovery, outpacing projected growth of overall U.S. economic output,” IFA’s chief executive Steve Caldeira said in an interview. He noted that a majority of IFA members are S-corporations and LLCs, though the group also represents large corporations like McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts.
Employment among franchise establishments should also accelerate next year, according to the report, which forecasts a 2.1 percent increase in employment in 2012 following a 1.9 percent increase over the past year. In fact, every segment of the franchise market is projected to bring on more workers, with business services franchises leading the way with a 3.6 percent increase in employment.
However, those numbers reflect only minimal growth compared to pre-recession employment levels, and the number of establishments still lags far behind the more than 770,000 up and running in 2007. Caldeira said a “whole host of issues” are handicapping projected growth next year, chief among them, limited credit access, costs associated with implementing new health care laws, and uncertainty surrounding tax reform.
“The least optimistic outlooks come from small franchise owners who are frustrated with the pace of the economic recovery and the lack of leadership in Washington, DC, which is making things worse not better,” Caldeira said. “They’re frustrated with the lack of support for pro-growth small business policies and the uncertainty created by negative rhetoric, partisan rancor and gridlock coming out of Washington, and I think that’s probably true through all industries right now.”

When deciding whether to recruit staff to fill vacancies either from within an organization (internally) or from outside the organization (externally), the advantages and disadvantages of each will need to be taken into consideration:
Internal recruitment
Advantages
* Lower cost, because not paying external agency to recruit for you
* May improve morale of existing staff
* Recognition and reward of the good performance of internal staff
* Reinforces & supports the company's succession planning strategies
* Internal staff are a 'known' quantity with existing information available about their skills
Disadvantages
* Can reinforce existing negative culture
* Run the risk of 'in breeding'
* Those that are not promoted can become discontent
* A strong performance management system is required
* Can encourage political 'in-fighting' for promotions among internal staff
Typically, if internal strategies are widely used by an organization, then the majority of outside recruitment only takes place for lower level jobs, which then serve as an entry point into that organization. This strategy works particularly well in organizations that have an embedded and effective succession planning process in place.
The disadvantage of these internal strategies is that vacancies often will attract applications from staff that are clearly not qualified or unsuitable for the position, even though they may be otherwise thought of as valued employees. How to manage potential 'fall out' and sustain staff morale in the face of unsuccessful job applications needs to be managed carefully by the organization.
External recruitment
Advantages
* Avoids the risk of creating resentment by promoting 'favorites' from the inside
* Outsiders bring in fresh ideas, skills and knowledge
* Forces internal staff to 'compete' & update their skills, education, etc
* Helps to facilitate change in culture
* New blood' & more dynamic workforce
Disadvantages
* New appointee may not fit the existing culture within the organization
* May affect the morale of internal staff who have been over-looked
* Require a longer period of induction and orientation
* Helps to facilitate change in culture
* May take longer to fill the vacancy
* May create resentment from existing employees
Many organizations may seek to fill a vacant position internally in the first instance, and then follow through with an external campaign if no suitable inside staff are identified. To avoid resentment among existing staff, the organization must be clear and consistent in communicating the corporate recruitment policy as it relates to sourcing suitable staff.
The major disadvantage in an external job search campaign is that it can be time consuming and costly, particularly in a full employment economy. Organizations need to be wary of the state of the labor market as it relates to the particular vacancy at hand, so that an effective external recruitment strategy can be clearly thought through and put into place.
For example, sales jobs are notoriously difficult to fill but are usually 'mission critical' to an organization, given that they are integral to securing a company's income. In such instances, and in order to fill the vacancy quickly, the nature and extent of advertising (e.g. local, national or overseas advertising) will need to be taken into consideration. On the other hand, when there is high unemployment, a smaller and less costly campaign may be sufficient.
